Everyone knows that Hanna is “better” than Fleshreaper -- but is Kitten Kemper more or less desirable than Rayman ? How about Witch Annarchy vs. Zombie Tycho? Hanna vs. Leeroy? … not so easy to say. Sure you can look at eBay to get some idea, but in such a low volume market the data there is sporadic at best. How do you know if a given price is due to natural demand or just because two people who needed it logged on at the same time ?
Enter PinMash. Beker on the PA forums came up with the original idea for this in a thread back in April, and I ran with it for the past few days. Once a sufficient number of ratings have been made, these ratings should give a good look at how much each pin is valued by the pin community.
The nature of an Elo rating system (or similar) requires lots of matchups to be accurate. Every pin starts out with a rating of 1000 after a database wipe, and every matchup moves one pin up and one pin down from there. The amount of rating change depends on the difference in the opponents' ratings. In our case the pool of 'opponents' (pins) is relatively large, so it will take a lot of matchups before the ratings are fully representative. I won't know for sure till we try it live, but I suspect something like 6,000 total matchups should get us to a good place.
The DLC pin is a mastodon-sized outlier in the pin scene. No other pin in existence comes anywhere close to matching it in value -- no other FIVE pins in existence combined come close to matching it. There is no data to be gained from matching it up against any pin released so far; so I coded a special exemption for it in the system: It will never be put into a matchup, and it is automatically top of the ratings list until further notice.
PM me on the Penny Arcade forums, dmosinee. Or just post in the community thread and I'll probably see it.
